Does it ever happened to you that as soon as you buy something, a new and more better model or version of it comes to the market even with a cheaper price? Feels awful right :(
Well! its irrelevant to this post. Today I am going to show you how you can save your money by not buying a WiFi router only for your mobile when you already have an internet connection and a WiFi enabled PC or laptop. The idea is that a built in device that is used to receive WiFi signals on your PC can also be used to send or transmit the signals when you are using internet connection other than WiFi.
I can't explain it anymore, the thing is that at the end of the post you will be able to convert your laptop or PC into a WiFi router.
Alright! Lets Begin.
- Make sure that you are using Windows 7 or later, because I think that this won't work on Windows XP.
- Make sure that your Wireless or Ethernet driver is up to date.
- Make sure that you have installed latest of .Net Framework, if not then you can get it from here.
>> We will be using a magic software called Easy Wi-Fi. It will do most of the job. You can get it from here. A portable version is also available there.
>> Just to be safe, turn on the WiFi :)
>> After installation and running the program you will see the main interface.
>> Goto Settings and then on Change ICS.
>> You will see your internet connections page. Now open the
properties of your desired internet connection that you wanted to share
as WiFi. In my case it is Ethernet/LAN.
>> Goto the Sharing tab, place a check mark on Allow to connect and select Easy Wi-Fi from the drop down menu below. See the image if you can't get it.
>> Back to the program. Click on Create/Modify and choose your Id and password for your network. Make sure that password have 8 or more characters. Now save the changes.
>> Click on the ON button at the bottom. You will see all the statistics on the Details tab.
>> You are now sharing the internet without a WiFi router.
>> Click on the Off button when you are done with sharing.
My Experience:
While searching on this topic, the first thing I came across was
Connectify Hotspot. That was the answer to all my searching but it was
not free. So I moved along and came to know that Windows 7 already have
this feature, you just need to enable it. Couple of free and open source
softwares are out there that can do this for you.
For the purpose of this post I have tested 7 free programs available on
Sourceforge or anywhere else. Believe me, Easy Wi-Fi is better than any
other thing in terms of size, ease of use and problem handling. But
still if you found something better, share it with me
