Download and install and Configure Openfire Server On Windows

This page details the installation of Openfire, the framework needed to run a network chat client.


1. Once you have downloaded the Openfire exe from the following link: http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/ run the installer.

2. Select the desired language from the pull down menu. Click Okay.


3. The Openfire Installer will start. Click Next.

4. Accept the license agreement, and click Next.

5. Designate the location that you wish to install Openfire. Click Next.

6. Designate the Start Menu folder location to install shortcuts. Click Next.

7. The installer will perform the requested operations.

8. Upon completing the install, you will be prompted to run Openfire for the first time. Click Finish to quit the installer and run the Opefire service.

9. The Openfire counsel will open up. Proceed to the Openfire configuration setup page to run through the setup.

Initial Setup of Openfire on Windows Server Standard 2008



This page is a follow up to the installation of Openfire. Only complete this configuration if you have done the proceeding steps.


1. After completing the installation detail on the previous page, and with the Openfire console open, click Launch Admin.

2. This will open a web browser with the Openfire admin setup page. Select the desired language and click Continue.

3. Enter the required domain (in this case: initech.com). The port numbers are set by default and for the purpose of this lab are fine as they are. Click Continue.

4. Select 'Embedded Database' and then click Continue.

5. Select 'Directory Server (LDAP)' from the Profile Settings menu. Click Continue.

6. The following three steps will connect you to the domain of your choice. Fill in the displayed fields with the following information, where the Administrator account is a domain account:

It is good practice to Test Settings before proceeding in the steps. This is a quick way to make sure your changes will take effect. Once you get a successful status pass, click Save & Continue.


7. In the User Mapping step, leave all fields set to default, and click Save & Continue.

8. In the Group Mapping step, leave all fields at default settings, and click Save & Continue.

9. In the last step, enter an admin account that will be used for administering the Openfire service (in this case, a specific account was setup for this sole purpose). Once all require accounts have been added, click Continue.

10. The setup completes the setup process and displays a final notification. At this time you may log into the Admin Console to make changes to, or confirm the Openfire settings.

11. The Admin Console displays a number of settings for the server. This completes the initial setup of the Openfire service.

Your Openfire service is now setup and ready to be used for chat purposes.
